Hi Trailrider - I'm in the south Luberon ... it's a bit of a way from you, isn't it.....?

Say, how do you manage shoeless? I wanted to keep my young 'un barefoot (especially as he was born semi-wild in the Luberon) but even with his tough little feet the rocks just did for him. Do you use boots? Or are her feet just fantastically hard? Or is it less stony where you are? It may be, of course, that I just didn't persevere for long enough.

But if you have any cunning little tricks or tips, I'd love to hear .....

Racaille,

You didnt sound in the least bit judgemental - just the kind of chat that goes on everyday in a yard that we all learn so much from. It is a very interesting thread ( or it is when I havant talked horsey stuff for so long!)

Daft question- do u clip them here in the winter?

Racaille I did not get the impression you were being judgemental at all and as you say it can be a minefield and we all have our opinions which are good to hear.

Kjpit7 re clipping in the winter we do not as they need a little protection from the mistral and besides we do not blanket them whilst they are turned out

Thanks guys, I'm reassured - it's always hard to tell how you come across when there are no emoticons to give a visual aid!!

I don't clip either - they are not in hard enough work for it to be necessary. They are now rugged at night as they are out 24/7 but it also has the advantage of stopping them become really, really woolly (which is a disadvantage in some ways but I can always add thermal rugs if/when it gets really bad) They will both compete a bit this winter so need not to get too fluffy (the youngster will start a few easy ODEs and my older boy does TREC) and this way seems a reasonable compromise.

We don't get too much mistral as we're protected by trees, but down on the Durance plain it can be ferocious.
