Season's Greetings

Today is Christmas Day! For many people this is a well-earned period of celebration and good times, making the most of the holidays with sumptuous food and gargantuan quantities of wine. However for millions of people the same period may be one of overwhelming loneliness, hunger and distress.

Making a difference

It's almost two years to the day since the massive earthquake and tsunami devastated much of South East Asia. The event saw millions of people all over the world motivated to make donations of time, money and goods to international aid organisations. 

But each day across the globe people are experiencing personal crises of perhaps equal magnitude as a result of natural or political disaster and the aid organisations are always needing resources to help those in distress.

The following small selection of international organisations are involved in numerous aid projects and most are able to take online donations:

• Disasters Emergency Committee (this organisation combines several British charities) 
• Care International (innovative and interesting donation schemes including "Give a goat") 
• International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
• Medecins Sans Frontières 
• Oxfam 
• Save The Children 
• Unicef  
• Secours Populaire
