High Days and Holidays

Public holiday, bank holiday, jour férié, call it what you will, long weekends like the Easter break can be a worker's beacon on the annual calendar. Some days, like the upcoming Labour Day/Workers Day holiday of May 1 are widely observed; others, such as the May Ascension Day and Pentecost are religious and apply to several countries, while the national days are just that, uniquely national!

Breaks and bridges

In some countries (notably the UK), public holidays which fall on a weekend are replaced by an off day the following Monday but this is not the case everywhere.

In France, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the odds are high that many smaller and family run businesses will close, doing the traditional thing, and faire le pont or "make the bridge", turning the period into a four-day holiday.
